Continuing its bid to raise the bar of excellence in teaching elementary mathematics, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) completed training 48 Metro Manila teacher trainers in problem solving.
Completing the Science Teacher Academy for the Regions (STAR) series on Teaching Elementary Mathematics through Problem Solving, the teacher trainers from the 15 divisions of the Department of Education National Capital Region underwent a three-day seminar-workshop that improved their skills in teaching through problem solving.
In partnership with the Philippine Normal University, STAR seeks to capacitate teachers with innovative strategies in teaching science and mathematics in time with the full implementation of the K-12 curriculum.

Aiming to raise the status of mathematicians in the Filipino society, Sharp Calculators through Collins International Trading Corporation recently awarded the Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians (TOYM) in Metro Manila.
In a ceremony held at the SM Aura Premier, Sharp Calculators along with its partners honored 10 multi-medalists in local and international mathematics competitions who came from the National Capital Region.
The TOYM Award was launched last year under the Sharp Minds Program, an advocacy that seeks to promote the development of science and mathematics culture among the Filipino Youth.

The Philippines continues to rise in international science and mathematics competitions as it bagged a historic 468 gold, silver and bronze medals in 2014, the most in history.
In the awarding ceremony of the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) honored the elementary and high school students who have won gold, silver and bronze in international competitions held last year. The number topped the previous high of 447 recorded in 2013.
Two hundred forty-three (243) awardees from the National Capital Region and Region 3 attended the ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
