Third year college students who are currently enrolled in priority science and technology courses may apply for the Junior Level Science Scholarships (JLSS) Program under the new Republic Act 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013”.

The Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) is now accepting applications for the said scholarship to enable graduates of the program to teach in secondary schools after graduation, as stipulated in the newly-passed law.

Dr. Josette Biyo, Director of DOST-SEI, said the Program seeks to address the shortage of quality teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in secondary schools.

“By fast-tracking graduates in STEM courses, the RA 10612 aims to strengthen the country’s science and technology education and hopes to inspire our scholar-graduates towards a career-path in science teaching,” said Biyo.

New graduates of this program will be given priority for job placement in high schools in the country and/or will be employed by the Department of Education in a position equivalent to a Special Science Teacher I in the Philippine Science High School. They shall also be allowed to teach even without Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) eligibility but has to pass the LET within five years from the date of hiring.

“We believe this strategy will not only help us produce quality teachers right away but will also ensure dynamic and effective science and mathematics teaching in many schools in the country,” added Biyo.

Those who will qualify will be awarded tuition and other school fees amounting to P10,000 per semester or P8,000 per trimestral term; book allowance, monthly stipend, clothing allowance, transportation allowance and health insurance. Application forms are downloadable through www.sei.dost.gov.ph and www.science-scholarships.ph or may be obtained at SEI or at the nearest DOST regional offices/provincial science and technology centers. Accomplished forms may as well be filed through the said offices. The deadline for filing applications is on September 30, 2014.The JLSS Scholarship Examination will be administered on October 18, 2014. (30)
